Full Details
ScarWork™ is a gentle manual therapy to promote further healing in scar tissue and adhesions, a perfect compliment for every physical therapist. The approach was developed by Sharon Wheeler over the last four and a half decades. Originally trained by Ida Rolf, Sharon has been working with fascia for many years and found releasing scars could bring life changing results for clients. Scar tissue can effect mobility, be a source of discomfort, cause emotional distress, and impact daily life. Even smaller, seemingly insignificant scars, can still restrict fascia and have a local or global effect on the body. For therapists working within women’s health, oncology, rehabilitation, lymphatic drainage or sports, ScarWork™ will be an beneficial skill to enhance your therapy business. This is a non-consecutive four day ScarWork™ training, an exclusive format developed by Restore Therapy to allow attendees time to practice their skills and complete home treatments before finishing training. Over the first two days we will cover the majority of the theory elements and introduce the 20+ ScarWork™ techniques, finishing with a supervised clinic with members of the public attending for treatment. We discuss the impact and treatment of all kinds of scars from trauma and operations from a holistic perspective. Taking a closer look at keyhole surgery, joint replacement, trauma scars including burns and c-section. Attendees will be asked to practice at home with friends and family and make notes on their treatments.

Over days three and four, we will discuss the home treatments while looking at the different approaches and treatment planning that may be suitable for your therapy background. We will revisit the techniques in paired practice. Finishing the course with more tutor demonstrations and two supervised clinics to further consolidate your technique working on “real” scars. Supervised clinics are organised by Restore Therapy with members of the public who wish to have ScarWork™. You may be asked to help publicise the clinics and are always welcome to invite clients, friends or family to book an appointment.

Non-intensive courses are considered best for retaining and applying new skills and knowledge. The benefit of home practice between class dates allows time for observation and reflection in the inclusion of the new skills in your usual therapy setting. While clinical research on manual scar therapy is limited and will not be covered in detail in the classroom, your tutor can signpost you to available texts to support arguments for the benefits of treatment. Pre-course reading is issued before your training commences to provide some basic information helpful for your course. Further reading to expand your knowledge on scar tissue and fascia are recommended should you wish to learn more.
